Jarrold Bridge wins Norwich Society Award 2013

Jarrold is delighted to announce that the Jarrold Bridge at Whitefriars received a Norwich Society Design Award in the Civic category at their bi-annual Award Ceremony on 15th October.

Of the Bridge the judges said “this L shaped structure in steel and timber was a wonderfully elegant design for a challenging problem in such a sensitive area. It is a bold, simple design which sits so well in its surroundings.

There are many excellent and exciting modern bridges which have been designed in recent years, the Millenium Bridge, The bridge in Kew Gardens and the Eyelid Bridge over the River Tyne. Allthese are elegant and dynamic structures and here in Norwich we can match them with this dramatic and visually stunning addition over the River Wensum. The bridge links the proposed St James Place business quarter and the Mousehold area with the Cathedral and the city centre.

Its detailing is simple and effective and the combination of Corten self-rusting steel and timber, works extremely well. The sweep of the steelwork as it rises over the river from each bank creates a strong organic form.

It has won other awards and our judges agreed unanimously  that the design is an outstandingexample of innovation, structural efficiency and aesthetic simplicity. Norwich should be very proud to have the Jarrold bridge and it is such a fitting tribute to Peter Jarrold’s vision of connecting Mousehold to the city.

The judges are delighted to give this wonderful scheme a Norwich Society award”.
